Job Description

Carrier Operations

As the Tracking Lead, you will oversee the end-to-end visibility and proactive management of shipments across our carrier network. You will be the go-to person for tracking, tracing and escalation of freight movements, ensuring timely updates, mitigating risks, and enabling smooth communication between our operations team, carriers and customer/warehouse contacts. Your role is central to delivering on our promise of “Ship With Confidence.”

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Track and trace shipments from dispatch through delivery: monitor carrier status, ETA changes, deviations, delays, reefer temperature issues, etc.
  • Provide real-time updates and notifications to internal reps and stakeholders via the load ELOG (electronic log) / tracking system.
  • Proactively alert warehouses, customer sites or consignees of ETAs, changes, or issues (for example — temporal, dock bump, demurrage risk).
  • Escalate and manage exceptions: identify delays, investigate root cause, coordinate with carriers/terminals/warehouses to drive corrective action.
  • Assist in filing and managing freight claims (damage, loss, delay) in conjunction with the operations/claims team.
  • Respond to paperwork requests, documentation follow-up (e.g., PODs, BOLs, temperature/reefers, intermodal switch docs).
  • Maintain records/logs of key tracking metrics (on-time performance, temperature excursions, missed ETAs, etc.) and report trends to management.
  • Collaborate with logistics operations, customer service, carrier management and sales teams to continually refine tracking and visibility processes.
  • Support process improvement initiatives: help define standard operating procedures (SOPs) around tracking & tracing, alerts, escalation workflows.
  • Potentially mentor or coordinate with tracking team members (if role expands) to ensure consistency, accuracy and responsiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with carrier agreements, customer SLA’s, DOT/transport regulations as they impact tracking & visibility.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Must live in the Kansas City area and be able to work in the office full time.
  • 2–4 years (minimum) experience in logistics operations, tracking/tracing, carrier operations or transportation management.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to monitor multiple moving parts (i.e., many freight lanes, multiple carriers, multiple modes).
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) – you’ll be updating internal teams, warehouses, carriers and customers.
  • Proficient in using tracking/tracing tools, TMS or other freight visibility systems.
  • Ability to manage exceptions and escalate appropriately: you’re comfortable jumping on calls, investigating issues, driving resolution under tight timelines.
  • Strong organizational skills, multi-tasker, ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and keep calm under pressure.
  • Understanding of freight operations (full-truckload, intermodal, LTL, temperature-controlled) is a plus.
  • Ability to work in-office full time (until the process is smooth).
  • A collaborative, problem-solver mindset: you’ll be part of the larger operations team and need to interface with carriers, internal teams and customers.
