Manager – Tax - Public Accounting (Modesto, CA)

Location: Modesto, CA (In-person preferred with hybrid flexibility available after 3 to 6 months.

Salary Range: $104K–$147K DOE

We’re looking for a Tax Manager to join a well-established, full-service public accounting firm with deep roots in the Central Valley. This role is ideal for someone coming out of a national or large regional firm (think: Moss Adams, PwC, or similar), who’s looking to step into a leadership position with real impact — managing complex clients, mentoring a growing team, and driving tax strategy.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Client Engagement & Leadership

• Serve as the primary tax advisor for complex clients across a variety of industries
• Interface directly with clients’ legal counsel, brokers, and taxing authority agents as needed
• Guide the overall delivery of tax services while ensuring compliance with firm policies and professional standards
• Ensure proper documentation, timely engagement letters, and file accuracy across all accounts
• Provide strategic tax planning and technical guidance, elevating the client experience

Technical Excellence

• Review complex federal and multi-state tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, and trusts
• Oversee and review ASC 740 (income tax provision) work and documentation
• Conduct and oversee thorough tax research and analysis to support high-level client decisions
• Identify tax savings opportunities and provide proactive recommendations

Team Development & Mentorship

• Be a hands-on leader, setting the tone for accountability, accuracy, and learning
• Serve as a go-to technical resource for team members on methodologies, standards, and procedures
• Create opportunities for others to grow through training, coaching, and thoughtful feedback
• Foster a collaborative, high-performance environment built on trust and continuous improvement

What You Bring:

• 7+ years of tax experience in public accounting, preferably with exposure to a variety of entity types
• Experience with tax provision review (ASC 740)
• Exceptional technical tax knowledge and ability to explain complex matters clearly
• Prior management or team lead experience; comfortable mentoring junior staff and seniors
• Ability to build strong client relationships through trust, responsiveness, and value-added insight
• CPA required
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field; Master’s in Taxation a plus
• Experience from a national or large regional firm (e.g., Moss Adams, PwC, or similar) strongly preferred
